How to work out a recipe's cost in three steps
Most people price a dish by guessing. A few minutes with your receipts gives you the real number, and it stays up to date.
-
1
Add what you buy
For each ingredient, enter the pack size and what you paid: a 2 kg bag of flour for $3.20, a dozen eggs for $4.20. The app works out the price per gram, millilitre or piece.
-
2
Build the recipe
Pick ingredients and enter the amounts you use, in whatever unit the recipe is written in. Add packaging, gas or labour as an extra cost, with a note.
-
3
See the cost per serving
Say what the recipe makes, such as 24 cookies, 8 slices or 6 boxes, and the cost of each one appears. Add the finished weight to see the cost per kilogram too.
Everything you need to cost recipes, and nothing you don't
Built for people who cook to sell, without the inventory systems and contracts of restaurant software.
Metric and US units
Grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds; millilitres, litres, teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, pints, quarts and gallons. Buy in one, cook in another.
Cost per serving, box or cake
Name what the recipe makes in your own words and see the cost of one. Enter the finished weight for a cost per kilogram.
Extra costs that aren't ingredients
Oven time, takeaway boxes, labels or an hour of your time, added to the batch and spread across everything it makes.
Prices change, past figures don't
Update the price of butter once and every recipe you are working on is re-costed. Submitted recipes keep the prices they were costed at.
No silent mistakes
A line with a missing price or a unit that can't be converted is flagged, and the total says it is incomplete, rather than counting it as zero.
Any currency
Dollars, pounds, euros, rupees or any other currency, written the way it is where you live.
Photos of the finished dish
Keep up to three photos with each recipe, so you remember how it should look when you make it again.

Questions
Is Recipe Cost Calculator free?
Yes. Sign in with a Google account and use every feature at no cost. There is no trial period and no card to enter.
How do I calculate the cost of a recipe?
For each ingredient, divide what you paid for the pack by the pack size to get a cost per gram, millilitre or piece. Multiply that by the amount the recipe uses, add up every line, add any extras such as packaging or oven time, and divide by the number of servings the recipe makes. Recipe Cost Calculator does all of this for you. The ingredient cost calculator shows the first step on its own.
Can I enter cups when I bought the ingredient by weight?
No, and that is deliberate. A cup is a volume and a bag of flour is sold by weight; converting between them needs the density of that particular ingredient, and a guessed density would end up in your cost. Enter weighed ingredients in grams, ounces or pounds, and liquids in millilitres, cups, spoons or fluid ounces.
Which currencies does it support?
Any currency with a standard three-letter code, such as USD, GBP, EUR, INR or AUD, formatted the way it is written where you live.
What happens when an ingredient price changes?
Update the price once and every recipe you are still working on is re-costed. Recipes you have submitted keep the prices they were costed at, so past figures do not shift.
Can I include packaging, gas or labour?
Yes. Each recipe has an extra cost for anything that is not an ingredient, with a note to say what it covers. It is spread across everything the recipe makes.
Where is my data kept?
In your account, so your ingredients, recipes and photos are on every device you sign in from. You can export a full backup file at any time. See the privacy policy for details.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. There is nothing to install.
